Throughout my High school art career, I do feel as though I’ve gained an understanding of the Artistic Behaviors. I’ve learned a lot since sophomore year and I really feel as though I’m well prepared to go more in depth in art school. I’ve definitely gotten the opportunity to explore these techniques in different projects, whether they were assigned to me or independent. I think the tie dye unit was my favorite, for tie dye really reminds me of summer so wearing the shirts always makes me really happy. I think I grew the most from the clay units, because I had absolutely no knowledge of clay coming into the class. I learned different techniques that made my pieces come out successful. The one thing i would change is to add a stricter critique schedule, because i think those really helped us and i always looked forward to them! I would keep the self-directed nature of it, because i really enjoyed the freedom of the classroom environment. Out of all of my pieces I’m the most proud of Heartstrings, which was that one with the severed head and the heart attached to it. I took a lot of risks with that one, from aspect ratio to water colors to anatomically correct,,,organs,,,and I’m overall really proud of it! The only thing i can think of adding is maybe a unit on cartoons or comics, but that may just be a personal preference of mine, haha.
here’s some of the art I’ve been working on while in quarantine!

before the quarantine, I wasn't really doing much in art besides finishing up my comic and some random sketchbook doodles here and there, along with some more Tesseract concepts such as a potential cover page. However, while being confined to the house with nothing better to do, I've been drawing my ass off all week.
I am proud to say that I finished the artwork for my senior project! I completed the last five pages, the covers, and the inside pages. All I have left to do is double check everything and figure out the bleed ratio, and then I can send it off to be printed. I have been doing a lot of things on the side as well, for I recently got back into a show that I'm really into called X-Ray and Vav and I've been teaching myself the art style! Idk, just something to keep me busy. As per usual, I spent the majority of my time on independent projects and comic book work. I am proud to say that I have seven pages left of my comic! I will likely get it finished sometime in the next few weeks, and then I just need to do revisions and cover pages, which will not take long at all.
In regards to art class, I've been making some good good books! In Tesseract, the comic I'm concepting for after Olly and Jay, involves these books that represent holy texts and things, so I decided to create the Tesseracts themselves! They came out really snazzy. I also worked on some illustrations regarding Tesseract, including this large watercolor piece that taught me to not be afraid to experiment with interesting light sources. Art is fun! I've discovered a new passion of mine: bookmaking! I started by crafting several miniature books, and eventually moved on to renovating an old journal I found at Saver's the other week. I ended up turning the journal into a prop: a copy of the holy text from a new comic I'm developing. The biggest thing I've learned with bookmaking is the actual process of binding pages, which has become a therapeutic process for me. Besides the books, I also created a tape mural and worked on more comic pages/illustrations.
The majority of what I've done this month are christmas presents and comic book pages, along with some concept art for a project I'm going to begin after my comic book is complete.
I have to say, I...really didn't learn any new skills. This month was mainly getting some illustration and pages done, which involve skills I've already learned in the past. I am proud of myself for what I have completed, though. I'm currently building my skills with a graphite piece which is still in the works. It's odd to me that I don't have portfolio stuff weighing me down anymore. It's a good feeling though-I'm able to immerse myself in fun projects again for myself. For example, I joined this community on Instagram called the Ulina Project, which is pretty much like a fake world with fake countries and everything. I applied to own one of the countries, and I got accepted! It's been really fun so far. I know that's not really art related, but I did design the flag for my country which is pretty rad. Alongside that, I created a collage piece representing my anxiety, and used a lot of symbolism in it. Besides that, I was able to get back into one of my favorite artistic/mathematical concepts: fractal geometry. I'm working on a huge fractal piece right now and have been experimenting with different fractals. In regards to artistic behaviors, I'm getting back into the exploratory side of things, and figuring out how to incorporate new concepts into my work.
This month, I solely focused on creating pieces and finalizing my college portfolio. This meant a lot more realism and focusing on techniques such as building value and facial proportions. I've always been really scared of portrait work, and have avoided the subject ever since middle school. However, I completed a graphite portrait of my boyfriend that I am EXTREMELY proud of, and figured out my favorite medium for realism: ballpoint pen.
The good news is, I submitted my portfolio today! This feels like a huge weight off my shoulder, since I can now focus on comic book work on weekends and art for myself on weekdays (which I haven't been able to create in s o long). I'm only a couple of weeks into my senior year here at Millis, and I'm already as stressed as ever. College prep has gone into full swing, and senior project stuff has started up as well. I managed to get through page 35 done on my comic over the summer, so I'm a little more than halfway through all of the pages. Fortunately, I got in contact with my potential mentor, and I plan on contacting the Cultural Council for a potential grant to get my comic published. So things are moving, stressfully, but swimmingly.
In regards to art I've done besides comic prep, I drew some trees to work on realism, and we're working on sketchbook concentrations of mundane objects. I chose to do flags for mine, and I completed 2 and am working on a third right now. I feel like I could've pushed my values a little more, especially with the first pieces, but overall I learned to take risks. For the second piece, with the red flag, I was debating on coming into the drawing with the red marker, and I t was kind of an impulse decision. it worked out for me in the end, so I know that sometimes my impulses can be a good thing! I am proud of these three pieces, however I dont know if I will continue with the flags for I feel as though I should focus on my comic book during this class period along with weekends, but whatever I do, I will make sure to document the experience here. The year is coming to a close, which means things are getting very stressful with final exams just around the corner. Fortunately, I completed by AP portfolio and sent it off, which feels like a huge weight off of my shoulders! Because of this, I have had time for several smaller projects and doodles as I prepare to begin the digitization of my comic book, which I will be primarily doing over the summer and the beginning of senior year. My last big project I completed was a ceiling tile with one of my favorite characters, for he has a lot of meaning to me and I wasn't sure what else would be appropriate to leave for my own legacy. I used gesso for the first time, and saw just how much of a difference it made when used a primer over the uneven texture of the drywall. It was smart for me to start with the background and work forewords from there to prevent smudging. If I were to change anything about that, I would probably make the designs in the background white rather than orange, and use black acrylic instead of sharpie for the linework. I am still immensely proud of it!
Besides that, I mainly focused on some concept art for my comic book, along with some other character designs to help train my style again (since it's changing...again...). However, I finally learned how to draw hands in a way that is relatively easy to follow, which is a big accomplishment for me! I'm also learning how to incorporate interesting lighting angles into my work, which is represented by the more...obvious piece here. Overall, I'm very happy with how my art is turning out so far in June. Sure my changing style will result in me having to redraw a lot of my comic panels, but it hasn't proved to be too much of a problem as of now. We can only hope it won't cause any major issues as I start the digitization. Again, I focused on concentration work this month, with completing one and starting another. I also doodled some characters from a show I really like so that was cool. Even though I’ve been very stressed this month I was still able to create original art, and reflected on a problem because I realized I need to pick up my pace with these but it just takes me awhile to make them for some reason? Idk. I just want my concentration to look g o o d and deadlines stress me out.
